Santa Martha Acatitla Carnival in Mexico
February 15, 2026, Mexico City, Cdmx, Mexico: The Santa Martha Acatitla Carnival kicked off this weekend, ahead of Holy Week celebrations in the Iztapalapa region, home to one of the world's most important carnival reenactments. These carnivals originated as a form of rebellion by enslaved people against the Spanish. These enslaved people, originally from the town of Acatitla, wore allegorical clothing, shoes, and masks with European features to mock those who oppressed them and violently imposed their religion. Through the streets of this region, they dance to orchestral music, dressed in charro suits made and embroidered by hand with gold thread and decorations featuring traditional figures. The charro women wear skirts, boots, and hats throughout the celebration. (Credit Image: © Josue Perez/ZUMA Press Wire (FOTO: DUKAS/ZUMA)
