Millions of people craving thrills in post war Britain find them in watching speedway racing, sport introduced to Britain in 1928, popular before the War and now enjoying the biggest boom in its career. Crowds rival football attendances in size. Teams from London and other cities compete for National League supremacy, individual riders strive for the coveted British Riders' Championship.
For riders, the game is risky and spills are frequent as machines with bellowing exhausts rip over a dirt track girdling a normal sports arena.
Spectators - women as well as men - take the game seriously, they join supporters clubs and turn up regularly to watch their favourites. A crowd can number 80,000 with thousands of others unable to get in listening to the results on loudspeakers outside the stadium.

Prince William and Prince Harry Taking Part in Enduro Africa 08's Charity Motorcycle Ride From Durban to Port Elizabeth, South Africa - 17 Oct 2008
Prince William and Prince Harry are taking part in a dangerous charity motorcycle rally in South Africa.
The Enduro Africa 08 takes place along the south coast of the country to raise money for UNICEF, the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund, Touch Africa and Sentebale, an organization co-founded by Harry.
William, 26, and Harry, 24, will join 100 other riders who will spend eight days crossing 1,300 kilometres of often treacherous terrain on Honda off-road bikes.
Up to six armed police officers will accompany the princes throughout the trek.
"The Princes are looking forward to the motorcycle ride that will raise money and the profile of Sentebale, a charity very close to their hearts," said a spokesman for their office, Clarence House in London.

February 13, 2025 – New York City, New York, United States: A demonstrator wearing a white mask and angel wings walks defiantly beside a line of police officers on motorbikes during a protest against U.S. immigration policies near City Hall and 26 Federal Plaza. The rally, heavily monitored by police, drew crowds opposing President Donald Trump’s immigration agenda. ICE (Immigration and Customs Enforcement) made at least 12 arrests on or near courthouse grounds since January 2025. Arrests by ICE during President Trump's second term topped 100,000 this week, as federal agents intensified efforts to detain unauthorized immigrants in courthouses, worksites and communities across the U.S. As o the first week of June 2025, ICE recorded more than 2,000 arrests each day, a dramatic increase from the daily average of 660 arrests reported by the agency during Mr. Trump's first 100 days in office. ICE has resorted to more aggressive — and controversial — tactics that have triggered outrage and even confrontations in some communities. Those efforts include arrests of migrants and asylum-seekers showing up to court hearings or check-in appointments that the government instructed them to attend. Immigration lawyers have strongly denounced those arrests, saying they deter migrants from complying with the legal process. Immigration roundups at some worksites have also been reported recently.
