Barack Obama visits Basecamp Masai Mara in Kenya - 2007

Barack Obama with Masaii "mamas"
OBAMA'S KENYAN VISIT
These pictures recently obtained by Rex Features show an, at the time, relatively unknown Barack Obama visiting Kenya.
The Mara National Reserve in Kenya is home to the densest population of wild animals in Africa.
At its heart is Basecamp Masai Mara, a Scandinavian initiative that aims to develop a partnership with the native Masai people.
The camp, which was created 10 years ago, was the brainchild of a group of globetrotting friends; among them was Norwegian venture capitalist Svein Wilhelmsen, who had the money to turn dreams into reality.
The aim of the project, he comments, was to "demonstrate that we could save the environment, develop a deep partnership with the local Masai and run a unique, successful safari camp according to modern, democratic management principles".
Swedish biologist Dr Lars Lindkvist, who heads up camp's associate charity, the Kenya Basecamp Foundation, likes to refer to this aim as the 'three Ps triangle' - "People, Planet, Profits".
In the past ten years the pioneering venture has picked up countless awards, and the Basecamp Foundation has become involved in an extensive network of philanthropic activities geared to protecting the livelihood of the Masai communities.
Unsurprisingly, given its goals and message, it was the camp's impressive record that drew a famous visitor to it in 2007 - the then relatively unknown US Senator Barrack Obama.
During his visit to the camp Obama and his family were thoroughly briefed on the three Ps concept - local principles that Obama now aims to apply on the world stage.
President Obama is only one of a few world leaders to have paid a visit to Basecamp Mara to see democracy in action on the African savannah. And he certainly seems to have left an impression.
During hi...
