Luxury car maker Rolls-Royce has unveiled a bespoke model with a
laser-engraved bonnet using a technique that took five years to develop.

It was for a Phantom model commission ordered through the British marque’s Private Office Dubai, one of five worldwide dedicated Rolls-Royce Bespoke commissioning centres.

The new car, called Arabesque, is inspired by geometric latticework known as mashrabiya, a feature of traditional Arabian architecture also recurring as hand-painted, embroidered and illuminated motifs in the design.
?In architecture, mashrabiya is built using intricately carved wooden screens that create privacy, allowing those inside to look out without being seen.

The latticework also encourages airflow, providing natural cooling for the building’s interior.

This newly patented laser engraving technique is the result of a five-year development programme inspired by an Italian technique called sgraffito,

This is an artistic practice of revealing contrasting layers of colour by precisely removing upper surfaces.

The bonnet was first painted in a darker colour, then sealed beneath multiple layers of clear coat before a lighter top layer was applied.

The geometric mashrabiya pattern was then engraved to a depth of just 145–190 microns into the uppermost surface, revealing the darker tone beneath.
