QUEEN ELIZABETH II - VISIT TO THAILAND
A protective arm for the Queen as she attends the bridge-opening ceremony.
There were fanfares, cheering crowds and little girls with posies, and if one didn't know any better it might have looked like any other royal occasion.
But in Belfast today the Queen was making a visit that resounded with historical and political significance.
It was her first visit since the terrorist ceasefire six months ago, and her first since the troubled province has had the chance to look to the future instead of its tragic past.
The trip, to open Belfast's new cross-harbour bridges and confer city status on Armagh, was overshadowed earlier this week when details were leaked to a Belfast newspaper, prompting fears that her security had been compromised.
Today, however, the city was doing its best to forget the violence; even security on the 89 million road and rail bridge was noticeably more relaxed than it would have been in the past, with no British troops in sight, only RUC officers....QUEEN ELIZABETH...ROYALTY
