    The Second Downfall Of Pompeii
In AD79 the Roman town of Pompeii was buried under an avalanche of ash after Mt Vesuvius erupted.

For those who lived in the ancient town the disaster was upon them so suddenly that there was no way to escape.

Tens of thousands were killed as death reined down upon them and the town was swallowed up - preserved for thousands of years under 4-6 metres of ash and pumice.

Today, Pompeii and its sister site Herculaneum are once again facing a crisis as an apathetic attitude finishes the job that Vesuvius started - destroying Pompeii forever.

For the ancient site, which attracts around two million tourists each year, is once again being buried - this time under a mountain of bureaucracy and indifference.

Following their burial Pompeii and Herculaneum were largely forgotten about for the next 1,500 years until their accidental rediscovery around 1592.

However, it wasn't until the late 18th century that a systematic evacuation of the sites got underway.

Fast forward to 1997 and the two towns were officially recognised by Unesco, which described them as "a complete and vivid picture of society and daily life at a specific moment in the past that is without parallel anywhere in the world".

And at one time this was a fitting description for the archaeological site, which has fascinated visitors through the ages.

In 1925 archaeologist Amedeo Maiuri was put in charge of the two sites and until his departure in 1961 he set about recreating the two cities' heyday.

However, with Maiuri gone this drive disappeared and slowly but surely Pompeii and Herculaneum have been deteriorating thanks to natural forces and human activity (both accidental and deliberate) .

Even when Unesco made its glowing praise of the sites the rot had already very obviously set in.

    Since then th...

Fire Destroys Richard Branson's Luxury Necker Island Home
Kate Winslet was amongst a host of VIP guests who had to flee Sir Richard Branson's luxury Necker Island home after it went up in flames.

The Hollywood star and her children were staying in the Great House on the Virgin tycoon's GBP 60million Caribbean island when it was struck by lightning.

The incident came as the area was battered by Hurricane Irene and it sparked a fire that quickly got out of control.

The 20 people in residence were forced to flee in their pyjamas in the early hours of the morning.

According to Branson Winslet acted like a true Hollywood heroine when she helped to carry his 90-year-old mother Eve to safety.

Also staying in the house at the time was Branson's daughter Holly, who had been due to get married at the venue later in the year.

Meanwhile, Branson, his wife and their son were in residence at another property around 100 yards away.

The Great House was completely destroyed in the blaze but no one was injured.

Branson brought Necker Island for GBP 180,000 in 1979, building the Balinese-style Great House in 1982.

He regularly loans out the island to his famous friends and the likes of Princess Diana, Mariah Carey, Oprah Winfrey and Janet Jackson have stayed there in the past.

Plans for the new 'World's Tallest' tower have been unveiled...

Emaar Properties, the leading Dubai-based global property developer and builder of the world's tallest building, Burj Khalifa, have unveiled plans to build a new tower, which will be the largest in the World.

The Tower is anticipated to be slightly taller than the 2,716 ft high Burj Khalifa, the world's tallest building since 2009, and is projected to cost $1 billion (GBP 700 million). Construction is planned to start in July 2016 with a four year construction programme.

With a design inspired by the lily and traditional minaret towers, The Tower will serve as an architectural icon, ready for the Dubai World Expo in 2020. Around a reinforced concrete core, The Tower will have a slender glass and steel façade.

August 10, 2017 - London, UK - London, UK. 10th August 2017. Campaigners the Peoples Republic Of North Kensington, an organisation supporting the former residents of Grenfell Tower, hold a Class War banner at the protest outside Duke's Lodge, a large block of flats in Holland Park calling on Kensington & Chelsea Council to compulsory purchase the empty block and refurbish its 27 flats as housing for families displaced by the Grenfell fire, around a 15 minute walk away. The protest was supported by some local residents from Grenfell and by Class War. Ian Bone of Class War, who lived in Grenfell for three years in the 1980s, spoke. The vacant block is owned by the Candy brothers, and a former resident who was passing and stopped to talk told with protesters she had spent £40,000 on interior decoration or her flat and that she and the other residents were forced out very much against their wishes. Plans to demolish the large block and replace it by 3 luxury villas were turned down by the council and the owners have now put the site on the market for £70 million, roughly twice the amount they paid for it. The Grenfell residents want to remain in the local area and remain as a community - despite which at least one family have already been rehoused by the council in Peterborough - and this, along with empty flats on the Sutton Estate would be an ideal location.
