New York City was the capital of the 70's disco scene, home to dance clubs such as Studio 54, Mudd Club and Bonds. The golden age of disco brought sexuality to new heights, with outlandish and extravagant behavior happening out on the dance floor, becoming a public performance. The rampant drug subculture pushed drugs that enhanced the dance experience such as cocaine, poppers (amyl nitrite) and Quaaludes. Liberated and under the influence, public sex became the norm. Club owners, such as Steve Rubell, reveled in the flock of the cream of the crop in art, music, film, fashion, politics and wealth. Decades later, Michael Wilkinson, costume designer for ?American Hustle,? the 2013 hit Hollywood movie, was inspired by Allan Tannenbaum's vintage photographs to recreate the fashions of this extravagant period for the film set in the seventies. He consulted Tannenbaum's best selling photo book "New York in the 70s." In his words: ?We looked at endless photographs of ?real? people from the period, mostly hard-hitting social documentary from photographers like Allan Tannenbaum." The film won a leading three trophies at the January 12, 2014 Golden Globes: best musical or comedy, Best Actress Amy Adams and Best Supporting Actress Jennifer Lawrence.
