Volunteers work together to clean one of 6 bays during the Plastic Whale Heritage Event in Norway.
Around 150 volunteers from 12 countries attended the Plastic Whale Heritage beach cleaning event in Norway. The event took place in 6 bays on the islands off the coast of Sotra, coming off the back of the 1 year anniversary of the Cuviers Beaked whale which was found to have several kilos of plastic inside it's stomach after it was euthanized and subsequently autopsied. The Plastic Whale Heritage is a group of around 30 organisations that have come together to raise the profile of the growing issue of marine plastics.//SOPAIMAGES_10430473/Credit:D.James Homewood / SOPA I/SIPA/1805011253 (FOTO: DUKAS/SIPA) *** Local Caption *** 00856942

The protesters are calling out on human rights abuses by the Saudi kingdom, as well as the UK government's 4.6 billion pounds of arms sales and support for Riyadh's intervention in the war in Yemen, which has killed an estimated 10,000 civilians and pushed the poorest country in the Middle East to the brink of famine.

STUDIO - Jaha Dukureh
Jaha Dukureh in a fabric shop in Serekunda Market.
Jaha Dukureh is a Gambian-born FGM-survivor living in Atlanta, Georgia, US. The mother of three is a women’s rights campaigner and director of NGO Safe Hands for Girls. Working closely with the Guardian newspaper she is fighting for an end to the harmful cultural practice known as female genital mutilation. As the daughter of an Imam and a practicing muslim, she is a vocal opponent to those who claim that it has any place in Islam. Earlier this year she organised a training program for Gambian journalists to teach reporters how to cover stories of FGM in their own country, an issue that has largely been neglected by the press. The program is intended to be rolled out to other African countries later in 2015, starting in Kenya. Jaha is currently raising funds and support for a women's centre in Gambia that will offer medical advice and information to girls and women at risk of FGM and other associated practices. So far Jaha and her charity, Safe Hands for Girls, has raised around $20,000 of the $80,000 they need to start construction. In April she proposed her plans for the women’s centre to the Minister for Land and Regional Government Momodou Aki Bayo and has been allocated a 200m x 200m piece of land for the purpose near the capital Banjul, and a proposal has been put forward to name the centre after the First Lady Zineb Jammeh.
