SHE 'S AN ESCALATOR GREASER
Latest recruits to London Transport 's army of women war workers are greasers for escalators. The task is an extremely dirty one, and the women are, therefore, provided with overalls and head coverings. They work in gangs of four under a male supervisor.
Photo shows: One of the women workers busy greasing an escalator at Swiss Cottage station. The work is done only at night when the machinery is at rest.

The Golden Chariot, a luxury train that tours heritage sites in Karnataka, Southern India - Apr 2009
THE GOLDEN CHARIOT - KARNATAKA'S LUXURY TRAIN
Visitors to Southern India can enjoy a luxurious voyage of discovery thanks to a veritable 'palace on wheels' - the Golden Chariot.
This five-star train transports tourists between sites of cultural and historic interest throughout the Indian state of Karnataka.
While the neighbouring states of Kerala and Goa are firmly established on the tourist trail, Karnataka is only just entering the mass consciousness of international travellers.
With poor roads, no real air access and only limited hotels the state has remained largely untouched.
However, the Golden Chariot is now opening up this area and revealing its many wonders, all of which are encapsulated under the region's "One State, Many Worlds" slogan.
And the concept of exploring India's heritage sites from the opulent surroundings of a train that comes complete with its very own spa is proving increasingly popular.
The Golden Chariot's journey begins in Bangalore's Yeshwanthpur railway station before it embarks on a seven day tour that winds its way through Karnataka, stopping at some of its impressive heritage sites, and eventually finishing in Goa.
Those who embark on this journey can enjoy a host of luxuries that are packed into the eighteen coaches that form the Golden Chariot.
Eleven of these carriages are given over to sleeping quarters named after the dynasties - such as Rashtrakuta, Vijayanagara and Chalukya - which formerly ruled over territories in Karnataka.
Each of the carriages, which cost around $350 per night for double occupancy, have a full-time coach attendant who provides an attentive, butler-like service.
The decor of each cabin draws its inspiration from Karnataka'...

This Sudanese house in the northern part of the camp was in the second step of construction, when the refugees used blankets to insulate the interior. The first step was to construct a simple framework of wood, while the last step is to put a plastic cloth on top of the blankets to protect the house from the wind and rain
The Calais camp's architecture, France
This fascinating photo series documents the range of makeshift buildings where refugees live in the Calais camp.
'Invisible Cities, Architecture of Exodus' is a project by Italian photographer Marco Tiberio, who was born in 1988. His photos show structures built by Sudanese refugees and Pakistani families as well as the Eritrean community at the camp.

REPORTAGE - Benin: Voodoo Zwillinge Tradition
Benin’s Living Dead: The Voodoo Twins Tradition
40% of the world’s twins are born in Africa. Benin’s Fon people have one of the highest occurrences at 1 in 20 births. The high rate of infant mortality and voodoo religion, Benin’s national religion, have begot some very particular practices concerning the deaths of one or both of these twins. In many other societies, twins are regarded as bad omens and often killed or abandoned at birth. However, in the Fon culture, twins have always been revered because Nana Buluku, voodoo’s androgynous creator of the universe, gave birth to twins. These twins in turn created the voodoo deities that run the world.
Once a twin dies, a wooden statue called the “hohovi” is carved, within which the spirit of the dead child is placed. These figurines are deified and treated almost exactly like the living children. For the Fon, twins are immortal. They continue to live even after their death, bringing blessings or misfortune depending on if there are either pampered or abused.
Three months after the birth of twins, if they are still living, the parents go collect gifts from other members of their community. If one or both of the twins die, then the mother carries the statues around between her breasts and walks around with a tray on her head, receiving alms for the twins. All donate some money or food. The mother may even take some wares on display at the market. If a woman is rich or powerful, then she sends someone to conduct this collection in her place.
In Bopa, a village situated on the banks of Lake Aheme in southern Benin, Dah Tofa and his wife reside. Dah Tofa, an educated man in his 60s, is a voodoo priest. His wife, who is around 40 years old, speaks only Fon. I ask for her name and she tells me the name she was born with, but this causes a bit of an incident. Her husband explains that she was supposed to say “Hounyoga”, the name of the voodoo goddess she worships whose name she took. Her husband tells me
