Man sets new world speed record in giant pumpkin boat, Portsmouth, Hampshire, Britain - 23 Oct 2013
A man has set a new speed world record today ... in a giant pumpkin boat. Dmitri Galitzine was attempting to be the fastest person to paddle 100m in a hollowed out pumpkin. And the contemporary artist was left celebrating after setting the record at Trafalgar Wharf in Portsmouth by paddling the distance in two minutes flat. Dmitri is also planning to cross the Solent from Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight in a giant gourd powered by an outboard motor.

Surfing photos by Brian Bielmann - 27 Jun 2011
Mandatory Credit: Photo by Brian Bielmann/Solent News / Rex Features ( 1377944h )

Wet And Wild Photographer Captures Surfers In Action
This stunning collection of photos captures some of the world's elite surfers in breathtaking locations.

The awe-inspiring shots were taken at beaches ranging from well-known wave havens to secret spots kept closely guarded secrets by the sport's top stars.

Photographer Brian Bielmann has spent more than 30 years travelling to far flung corners of the world in search of the perfect photo.

The most dramatic image shows the moment a surfer is almost decapitated as a jet ski flies past his head and misses him by just inches.

It was taken in Tahiti, where the waves are so big the only way to ride them is to be towed into them by jet ski.

World-renowned surfer Raimana van Bastolaer asked his friend Reef McIntosh to tow him into the wave.

However, it was the first time Reef had ever tried to do a ski pull and when the tow rope was released the wave started to pull the jet ski over the lip.

Brian said: "Reef jumped off the ski and as Raimana rode through the tube of the wave, the ski got sucked over his head, missing him by inches.

"Raimana made the wave although he was nearly decapitated. Reef got sucked over with the wave and slammed into the water.

"The ski was destroyed but thankfully everyone was ok."

Brian's favourite shot was also taken in Tahiti, in Teahupoo, where some of the world's biggest waves break.

Brain said: "This photo was taken when the waves were huge. The surfer CJ Hobgood somehow managed to ride this incredible wave.

"I've never seen anything like it. It was a beautiful moment and when he landed it he was standing perfectly in the barrel.

"I consider this the most beautiful wave I have ever shot with a surfer on it."

Small enough to be used legally on the pavement or inside a shop, the GBP 5,500 QTvan is so named because it caters to three peculiarly British obsessions: caravans; queuing and tea. The tiny caravan is ideally suited to queuing overnight for the sales or tickets for Wimbledon fortnight, and boasts tea-making facilities to make any long wait bearable.According to the Environmental Transport Association (ETA), the QTvan is ideal for the estimated 220,000 people who use a mobility scooter without breakdown cover, and who face the prospect of a very long wait should they suffer a mechanical fault or their battery runs flat. GRIEVING PARENTS LEAP TO DEATH WITH BODY OF SON

A grieving couple have committed suicide following the death their son.

Neil Puttick, 34, and his wife Kazumi, 44, leapt to their deaths at Beachy Head in Eastbourne, while carrying the body of their five-year-old son Sam.

The desperate act came just hours after the youngster, who had been paralysed from the neck down in a car crash as a baby, died from meningitis.

The three bodies were found by coastguards around 400ft down the cliffside.

Sam's body was found in a rucksack near to his parents. A second rucksack was found to contain children's toys.

Chief Inspector Dick Coats of Sussex Police said officers were not looking for anyone else in connection with the deaths.

Sam was left paralysed when he was 16 months old after his baby chair was thrown out of a car during a crash.

Charity worker Neil and translator Kazumi - originally from Japan - gave up their jobs in order to care for their son.

They went on to raise around GBP 30,000 in order to adapt their home - a cottage in Brokerswood, Wiltshire.

However, tragedy struck when Sam contracted viral meningitis. After being told by doctors that there was no way to save him the Puttick's took him home to die, which he did on Friday (29 May).

Less than 48 hours later, on Sunday (31 May), Neil and Kazumi drove to Beachy Head with the body of their son as part of a suicide pact.

The cliffs at Beachy Head reach up to about 600ft (180m) high and are a suicide black spot.

According to Coastguard Stuart McNab, who recovered the three bodies, an average of 20 people jump from the cliffs every year.

The Beachy Head Chaplaincy Team was set up in 2004 to patrol the area in an attempt to prevent suicides.
