The 96th annual Nathan's July 4th Hot Eating Contest took place at the Nathan's Famous in Coney Island (Stillwell & Surf avenues). Joey " Jaws " Chestnut consumed 62 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes, winning his fifth consecutive title. Over 40.000 spectators attended the event with millions around the world watching. First time ever, three Chinese eaters competed and also for the first time ever, women competed separate from man. Thousands at Coney Islang hot dog eating contest
Joey Chestnut gobbled a record 68 hot dogs in ten minutes, capturing his third straight Nathan's Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog Eating Contest at Coney Island. He beat his archrival, six-time titleholder Takeru Kobayashi, who ate 64 1/2 wieners. The number of dogs consumed showed how far the contest has come since the first one in 1916, when 13 dogs were enough to win. Even by 2000, 25 dogs secured victory. At the five-minute mark, Chestnut led 42 dogs to 40 as he and Kobayashi, standing side by side, alternately stuffing hot dogs and sips of water into their mouths. (POLARIS) (FOTO:DUKAS/POLARIS) -

American declared hot dog-eating champ at annual Nathan's competition
Californian Joey Chestnut set a world record by eating 66 hot dogs and beating six-time Nathan's hot dog-eating champ Takeru Kobayashi at the annual Coney Island contest. Chestnut's victory over Kobayashi ended the Japanese man's six-year reign following the extraction of a wisdom tooth and complaints of jaw pain in the run-up to the July 4th competition.
