Out of the Dust - A Life in Afghanistan, by Hans Stakelbeek

- Very little remains of the royal palace of Dar-ul-Aman. The former residence of the kings of Afghanistan is now only a ghostly reminder of how the city used to be. The palace, - originally intended to house Afghanistan's parliament - is close to Kabul Museum, which has also been plundered. The museum is now being renovated, with Dutch support. {br}{br}The palace has been in the hands of NATO troops since 2005. It is now used as an observation post. Restoration work has not yet begun, because it is under NATO occupation and thus vulnerable to attack. There are still plans to house parliament in the building sometime in the future.

OUT OF THE DUST - LIFE IN AFGHANISTAN
A powerful collection of images of everyday life in Afghanistan will be displayed for the first time in the UK in a new exhibition this summer.
'Out of the Dust - Life in Afghanistan' features images by Dutch photographer Hans Stakelbeek. The exhibition runs from 30 July-31 August 2008 at PM Gallery in west London.
In 2007 Hans Stakelbeek was commissioned by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to document the reconstruction of Afghanistan during the efforts to restore peace and stability to the country.
Stakelbeek made four trips last year, shooting in Kabul and Uruzgan, as well as other remote areas.
As the project developed, he also became interested in capturing the stories of the people he came to know, as well as the reconstruction efforts required by his official posting.
'Out of the Dust' presents a set of images that pays tribute to t...

A TV crew films the mummy of Pharaoh Queen Hatshepsut that is on display at the Egyptian Museum in Cairo on Wednesday, June 27, 2007. Using DNA from a tooth, Egyptian archaeologists identified a mummy found in 1903 as the remains of the Pharaoh Queen Hatshepsut.
Queen Hatshepsut, one of the greatest Queens of ancient Egypt, was the only female Pharaoh and reigned in the 15th Century B.C. Queen Hatshepsut was found in the KV60 tomb in the Valley of the Kings, near Luxor, Egypt. (FOTO: DUKAS/WORLDPICTURENEWS)

New Zealand Body Art Awards 2009, Bruce Mason Centre, Takapuna, Auckland, New Zealand - 25 Jul 2009
A FANTASY OF COLOUR AT BODY PAINTING AWARDS
Body art enthusiasts from around the world have descended on Auckland to take part in the prestigious New Zealand Body Art Awards 2009.
New Zealand's Body Art and Special Effects industry is currently one of the leaders in the world when it comes to creating fantastical creations for some of Hollywood's biggest blockbusters.
The annual body art awards is a showcase for this industry and this year's 'Fantasia Asia' theme brought a rich flavour of colour, music and dance to the Bruce Mason Centre in Takapuna.
Competitors and their models at the show featured in a number of different categories, including hand painted, special effects, world of fluorescent and a Maori myths & fantasies section.
The day saw hunchbacked scaly swamp monsters, futuristic androids, and ethereal other worldly creatures all parade across a continual catwalk.
Five times Oscar award winner and head judge Richard Taylor comments:
"I look forward to seeing the NZ Body Art Awards continue to grow into a truly international event that will bring world wide focus on the artists and practitioners working in this most unique medium. (FOTO:DUKAS/REX)

Tourism Police and Security Officers protecting visitors from the threat of terrorist attacks, Egypt - 18 Mar 2010

EGYPT'S TOURISM POLICE
AK 47s and MP5s slung low or bulging under a blandly coloured shirt: most sightseers are blissfully unaware as they queue in the hot sun that these deadly weapons lurk close by at Egypt's top tourist attractions.
With a fire rate of 600 and 800 rounds per minute, the guns have the potential to do a staggering amount of harm in a very short space of time.
They are part of the armoury of the Tourism Police who, in the shadows of temples and tombs and wearing civilian clothes or uniforms, keep a constant vigil, just as the priests of ancient Egypt did for the Pharaohs.
But these days they are watching the never-ending stream of tourists, alert for those who may have more sinister motives than just admiring the stunning relics of Ancient Egypt.
All over the country it is evident that there are hundreds of officers bearing arms to keep their precious income-generating guests safe. To do this without too many overt displays of security is quite a difficult feat to achieve.
But the Egyptians do manage to keep a sensible balance between allowing the tourists to move about freely without too many restraints while also enabling them to feel safe.
Although there is still that danger of a terrorist attack on the streets of Luxor, one feels more at ease visiting what is arguably the world's greatest concentration of historic sites with these officers dotted around.
Walk-through metal detectors are everywhere: at temples, museums and on boats as much as at airports and tourist hotels.
Sometimes the buzzing alarms are apparently ignored, but only when a little common sense is being applied.
For example, I watched a 65-year-old English woman tourist breeze through, s...

Holyhead - Prince William and Kate Middleton's future home town
After Prince William and Kate Middleton marry, they will begin their married life living in Holyhead on the Welsh island of Anglesey, close to RAF Valley where the Prince is serving with the Royal Air Force for the next three years as a search and rescue helicopter pilot.
The couple first moved to the remote North Wales farmhouse back in April to give themselves more privacy as a couple, after press intrusion in 2007 grew to the extent that the couple publicly split.
This will be distinct change in lifestyle for the couple, who will be moving away to a rural retreat many miles away from the boutiques and bars of Chelsea.

Florence Green, the UK's last surviving female World War I veteran, celebrates 110th birthday, Kings Lynn, Norfolk, Britain - 18 Feb 2011
Britain's last surviving female World War I veteran is celebrating reaching her milestone 110th birthday. Florence Green joined the Women's Royal Air Force shortly before the end of the conflict in 1918, and worked as a waitress at Marham. The WRAF was founded only months before Florence joined up with the intent of providing female mechanics to free up men for service. A huge enrolment meant that the women volunteers also fulfilled other wartime needs. Today, Florence was presented with a special birthday cake by Flt Lieut Tim Serrell-Cooke. Florence, who lives with her daughter 89-year-old May, was identified as a surviving war veteran in 2008, when a researcher found her service record at the National Archives. As such she is believed to be one of only three surviving veterans of the conflict in the world. Briton Claude Choules, who now lives in Australia, served in the Royal Navy, and turns 100 in March. Meanwhile, American ambulance driver named Frank Buckles turned 110 earlier this month
