Karamba Diaby, first black German member of Parliament
September 20, 2013 - Halle, Lower Saxony, Germany: Karamba Diaby gets his ties knotted as part of his preparation for his first trip to Berlin as an elected member of the Parliament. Born in Senegal, Dr. Diaby, a chemist and Social Democrat who became a German citizen in 2001 has become the first black German member of Parliament as he was running for a seat for the SPD party in Halle in the general elections, on Sept. 22, 2013. In 1992, he was attacked by a gang of far-right skinheads while walking the streets of Halle. Two years ago, he was inundated with hate mail and death threats after his photograph appeared on the front page of a right-wing newspaper. In his words, racism occurs everywhere and since German reunification in 1990, Halle has made great progress in overcoming the problem. (Hermann Bredehorst/Polaris)
