'Prostitution is seen as a leisure activity here': tackling Spain's sex traffickers. It’s staggeringly big business in Spain, where demand is being met by traffickers. Can a groundbreaking team turn the tide?
Human trafficking survivor "Mari?a". The Romanian women are often tricked by a ‘lover boy’ – a young man who seduces them with the promise of a better life.
According to the UN, Spain takes third place in the World when it comes to demand for prostitutes, after Thailand and Puerto Rico. The State Department’s report on trafficking said that 300.00-400,000 women worked in prostitution in Spain. The report said that 90 percent were trafficked. A total of 5,695 people were released from slavery by Spain’s security forces between 2012 and 2016, according to the Interior Ministry.
