War On Christmas: Alan Sailer's Exploding Toys
If you are excited about Christmas, look away now.
Serial object destroyer Alan Sailer has turned his twisted attention to exploding much-loved toys.
The high-speed photography fanatic has selected children's favourites and destroyed them with firecrackers.
And thanks to his photographic expertise, the 57-year-old has managed to capture the moment the poor playthings were blown apart.
Unfortunate toys and characters include a Mickey Mouse mug blowing its top, Tweety Pie losing his head, a troll head cracking up and a Rubik's Cube exploding into pieces.
Alan, from Camarillo, California, explains: "The poor defenseless toys are common so I pick them up from garage sales. I try my best to keep the costs under a dollar per shot.
"I will admit that it is fun to mess with toy archetypes. I have to smile when an icon of sweet innocence like My Little Pony crumbles to pieces in rather horrifying way."
To blow up the objects Alan uses a firecracker modified so that it can be fired using an electrical signal. He then has to synchronise the opening of the camera shutter with the explosion. It does not need to be really accurate, but it does need to be better than lighting a fuse.
"The camera is unimportant, it's not a special camera. I use a Nikon D90 for most of my shots. I have also used an old Nikon F3 film camera, a Canon G6, Rebel XT etc. The camera must have a manual focus and manual settings is all.
"The flash is the key, that and the detector/trigger. I use a home built flash based on a model built in the 1950s by Harold Edgerton. The flash is really fast about 1 millionth of a second and it stops the action.
"The detector/trigger is also critical. It detects that the debris from the explosion has arrived and fires the flash at ...

Think YOU are being overstretched in the office? Female contortionist brings new meaning to the term flexible working in incredible calendar shoot
Think YOU are being overstretched in the office? Female contortionist brings new meaning to the term flexible working in incredible calendar shoot
Blonde contortionist Julia Gunthel really means business.
The bendy bombshell has released a calendar for 2013 featuring herself in a variety of incredible positions around an office set.
Rubbery Russian Gunthel, who now lives in Germany and goes by the name of Zlata when performing, is pictured typing, answering the phone and making coffee all while bending her body in to unbelievable shapes.
She is snapped operating a computer while performing a hand-stand, delivering a presentation with her head tucked between her thighs and even becoming a living table by bending over backwards for her boss.
Zlata, the self-titled 'Goddess of Flexibility' produces her head-turning calendars by contorting her body with a different theme each year (this year was obviously eighties working girl) and previous themes have included Marie Antoinette and domestic goddess.
She has a rare condition which makes all her tendons extremely pliable, and discovered her talent for contortion at the age of four.
The 5ft 9ins blonde weighs eight-and-a-half stone and spends most of her day working out and training for shows around the world.
One of her favourite acts is bending herself backwards at a perfect 90 degree angle, virtually cutting herself in half so the back half of her hands touch her feet.
Her talents also include squeezing herself into boxes just 50cm squared.
Zlata, who has ambitions to head to Hollywood to turn her hand/head/legs to acting, has previously said: ÔDoing these poses just feels natural to me. Sometimes it can get a bit uncomfortable if I have to hold a pose for a long time in photoshoots.
'But I think thatÕs like anyone who sits down for a long time Ð their muscles get stiff.
Ê
'I donÕt really diet but I have to train very hard to keep my muscles in shape and to be as flexible as possible.Õ
