Workers remove Sargassum seaweed at Soliman Bay Beach, Tulum, Quintana Roo state, Mexico on August 17, 2018. Sargassum—a brown seaweed that lives in the open ocean—has overwhelmed shorelines along the East Coast of the United States, Gulf of Mexico, and the Caribbean. Researchers say that the Sargassum outbreak started in 2011, but it has become worse over the years and could cause a serious environmental disaster. As the Sargassum is cleaned up on the shorelines, in a matter of days the shorelines are once again filled. When the Sargassum seaweed lands and starts to decompose, a toxic hydrogen sulfide gas is released, spreading an unpleasant odor and potentially causing adverse health effects. Apart from being an annoyance for tourists, Sargassum also affects oxygen levels in the water, brings contaminants and other microorganisms to the beach, changes the ecological balance of coral and causes beach erosion when its removed in such large quantities. There are several factors that could explain the proliferation of Sargassum in recent years. These include the rise of sea temperatures, the change of sea currents due to climate change and nutrients dumped into the ocean from farming and deforestation around the world. A photographer has captured a series of stunning photos of the Peruvian landscape.
Photographer Brian Flaherty created the Notes from Peru photo series to document his journey across the southern Peruvian landscape, from the rugged extremes of the Andes to the vast expanse of desert at the Pacific.
Brian, who is from San Francisco, said: "Throughout the journey I was struck by both the deep history and character of the land and the inhabitants who weather its elements with grace, fortitude and a posture of humility.
"This series of photos provides a small glimpse of the strength of this land and its people."

A family of squirrels appear to be getting ready for a long cold winter by taking it in turns to distribute their nuts around the garden using a wheelbarrow.
The three red squirrels all grabbed hold of the handles of the tiny 20cm-long wheelbarrow, big enough to hold a dozen or so pecan nuts.
Photographer Geert Weggen, 48, is visited by the squirrels regularly and has watched two of them closely over the last two years.
However, he recently spied them lurking near the small copper wheelbarrow in his garden which was full of nuts.
Sitting three metres away, Geert watched them closely from his home in Bispgarden in central Sweden.

Meet the petite piglets of Pennywell Farm.This little piggy played the guitar, this little did some ballet and this little piggy sprouted wings and flew. They might be mini porkers but this collection of micro pigs sure are mighty cute. The squeally tiny youngsters have all been born and raised over the years at Pennywell Farm in Buckfastleigh, Devon. Fuzzy, friendly, and small enough to hold in the palm of your hand, these teacup pigs are also naturals at posing for the camera. And they have now been immortalised in a new 2013 wall calendar by photographer Richard Austin.

Looking for a new ornament for your home? How about a possum with a doll's head?
Perhaps a goldfish with a pheasant for a head and feet from a blackbird might look good on your mantelpiece?
These and other oddities have been created by wacky taxidermist Andrew Lancaster.
Born in North Yorkshire, but now living in New Zealand, Andrew specialises in creating weird animal hybrids.
The 53-year-old started taxidermy 14 years ago, after moving from Britain, but only began creating his fantasy creatures in the last two years.
He explains: "I would see lots of animals by the side of the road and think it was a shame they would be wasted. Now I usually pull over and head back to pick them up. I would never hurt any animals myself"
