Northern Italy at night.
Northern Italy at night. Everyone is used to living with smarter devices. But imagine living in a smart city where everything from public transport to city lamps are efficient and sustainable. This seemingly simple image of northern Italy from Earth orbit is one of the ways space is paving the way for cities to get smarter.
Doorbells, refrigerators and toothbrushes are everyday devices that are now controllable, customisable and designed to make your life run more efficiently by collecting and relaying data using telecommunications satellites.
Other space technology is helping to collect valuable data that can result in larger scale changes for cities.
Take one of humankindÕs greatest achievement in space so far, the International Space Station.
Astronauts routinely snap photos of Earth from the orbital outpost, and not just for the likes and retweets. Photographs like this one of northern Italy, taken by ESA astronaut Luca Parmitano during his 2013 mission, provide vital data about city efficiency and sustainability.
Researchers have devised a method to assess the environmental impact of artificial light on humans, animals, and the surrounding environment using one of the few sources of publicly-accessible night images of Earth in colour: pictures taken by the astronauts from the International Space Station.
City lights are disruptive not only for the lives of nocturnal animals, who suffer from disorientation and behavioural and physiological changes, but also for people. An excess of artificial light before bedtime reduces melatonin production, a hormone linked to sleep. This suppression can lead to negative effects on our health, including breast and prostate cancer.
In addition, streetlights account for a large chunk of a countryÕs energy consumption. As the world grapples with climate change and cleaner sources of energy, how that energy is put to use is a bright topic.

Testing a candidate design for a subsonic parachute to slow a future mission to Mars inside Canada’s National Research Council wind tunnel, in Ottawa.
Mars has a thin but substantial atmosphere, which is both a hindrance and a help to mission designers. Protective heat shields must be flown to protect any spacecraft making atmospheric entry but parachutes are then able to slow down and stabilise their descent.
Up until now single parachutes have been employed for Mars missions, but in future a double parachute system offers a way to deliver a greater payload to the surface with enhanced trajectory control. A smaller, supersonic parachute for initial deceleration would be supplemented by a larger subsonic parachute for the descent phase.
UK company Vorticity Systems has performed testing on a range of subsonic parachute shapes for Mars missions with support from ESA’s Technology Development Element.
Testing made use of a drone, a helicopter and low- and high-altitude balloons as well as the 9 x 9 m Canadian wind tunnel pictured, plus a smaller 2 x 3 m wind tunnel at the same site – in combination with high-fidelity software simulations.
One test even seeded the air around a parachute with tiny droplets of olive oil, which were laser-scanned to better view their flow pattern.
“This was a very challenging project involving many tests at different facilities,” comments Luca Ferracina, overseeing the work for ESA.
“We collected an enormous amount of data to help us to better understand the behaviour and performance of many parachute types. This information will be key to designing future parachutes for Mars along with other planets such as Venus, Neptune and Uranus.”Credit: ESA / eyevine

The estuary is dominated by mangroves and lowland coastal plains and is an important breeding habitat for multiple waterbird species. Diverse socio-economic activities are supported by the estuary, such as fishing, tourism and sea transport, which help to alleviate poverty at the community level. But the estuary is being threatened by a growing population. For example, unauthorised housing development has caused the removal of about 20 hectares of mangrove vegetation over the past five years alone. Poor waste disposal, unsustainable fishing and many other factors are also taking their toll on the ecosystem. Some 295 000 hectares of this estuary is protected under the Ramsar Convention – an intergovernmental treaty for the sustainable use of wetlands. There are over 2000 sites worldwide considered to be wetlands of international importance by the Convention. ESA assists the Ramsar Convention through the GlobWetland Africa project and the TIGER initiative ‘Looking After Water in Africa’, which provide satellite data to be used to monitor and sustainably manage these precious resources. World Wetlands Day is observed on 2 February, the anniversary of the signing of the Convention. The theme of this year’s World Wetlands Day is ‘Wetlands for our Future: Sustainable Livelihoods’.

ESA astronaut Tim Peake took this image from the International Space Station during his six-month Principia mission. He commented: "The ISS just passed straight through a thick green fog of auroraÖeerie but very beautiful."
Professional photographer Max Alexander has known Tim Peake from before his launch into space and gave Tim photography tips during his mission. Max comments: "The International Space Station is flying right through the aurora in this eerie image - which also gives the viewer the feeling of flying through these curtains of space weather. Photographing the aurora on the surface of the Earth is difficult; much harder still from space due to the speed the ISS is travelling. Tim has very quickly mastered low light photography to capture this."

ESA astronaut Tim Peake took this image from the International Space Station during his six-month Principia mission. He commented: "I love orbiting over Africa - it is like flying over a canvas of art #AfricaArt"
Professional photographer Max Alexander has known Tim Peake from before his launch into space and gave Tim photography tips during his mission. Max comments: "This picture of an African desert is all about texture and vibrant colour. It could also easily be taken for a satellite image of Mars – with its rusty orange tones. As Tim said - there are more similarities between Mars and the Earth than you think."

Aorounga impact crater in Chad
Summer in the Northern hemisphere has arrived and with it the long, sunny days and hot, sticky nights. Among barbecues and beach days is Asteroid Day, celebrated each year on 30 June, to raise awareness and educate people about small rocky bodies hurling through space that have the potential to do serious damage to our planet. Though Earth is peppered with the pot marks of asteroid impacts across millennia, like the Aorounga impact crater in Chad, photographed here by ESA astronaut Tim Peake in 2016 from the International Space Station, we have not experienced a major impact since the Tunguska event in Siberia on 30 June 1908.

ESA astronaut Tim Peake took this image from the International Space Station during his six-month Principia mission. He commented: "From one mighty ocean to another – ships passing through the Panama canal."
Professional photographer Max Alexander has known Tim Peake from before his launch into space and gave Tim photography tips during his mission. Max comments: "I really like the way Tim has used the clouds to frame the Panama Canal – giving a sense of the division between North and South America, and the passageway between the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. Also the use of scale – once you see that those are ships lined up down there, the picture really comes together, and shows you how the Panama Canal works."

ESA astronaut Tim Peake took this image from the International Space Station during his six-month Principia mission. He commented: "More stars in the Universe than grains of sand on Earth – easy to believe from up here."
Professional photographer Max Alexander has known Tim Peake from before his launch into space and gave Tim photography tips during his mission. Max comments: "Most pictures taken from the ISS don't show stars, and astronauts get asked if they can see many. They can, in great profusion, and Tim has really captured this. Normally the stars are too dim in relation to the Earth for their cameras to record them. However, when exposing for the night side of the Earth their cameras can see these stars. Tim has pushed his equipment to the limit here, using a high ISO setting, with the lens wide open, and using a long exposure."

ESA astronaut Tim Peake took this image from the International Space Station during his six-month Principia mission. He commented: "View from the office this morning. Good work Tim Kopra on the capture!"
Professional photographer Max Alexander has known Tim Peake from before his launch into space and gave Tim photography tips during his mission. Max comments: "Timing is everything in this shot of the Cygnus supply spacecraft being captured by Tim Kopra using the Canadarm. This rendezvous in space is gorgeously set against the backdrop of rich colours, with obliquely lit cloud tops over the Caribbean. And the shot would have been over in a flash."

ESA astronaut Tim Peake took this image from the International Space Station during his six-month Principia mission. He commented: "We see 16 sunrises every day - but I've never seen one as beautiful as this. Good morning Earth!"
Professional photographer Max Alexander has known Tim Peake from before his launch into space and gave Tim photography tips during his mission. Max comments: "A superbly composed picture of a sunrise - one of sixteen that astronauts on the International Space Station see every day. This is a very difficult photograph to shoot. The combination of the ISS travelling at 28 800 kph, and using an exceptionally long telephoto lens – effectively a focal length of over one metre – means that Tim has to work extremely quickly and precisely to nail the shot."

Professional photographer Max Alexander has known Tim Peake from before his launch into space and gave Tim photography tips during his mission.
