A giant statue of movie monster Godzilla is set to welcome airline passengers to the creature’s home country of Japan.
The 40 metre long and nine metre high model is said to be the world's largest Godzilla monument .
It will be built in the departure lobby at Tokyo’s Haneda Airport inTerminal 3 in December.
The project aims to promote Japanese entertainment using Godzilla which celebrated its 70th anniversary in November 2024.
The Godzilla statue is based on its depiction on screen in the 2023 film Godzilla Minus One -1.0 which includes blue glowing spinal spikes.
A more moderately sized Godzilla statue will be installed in the second-floor arrival lobby along with graphics depicting monsters from throughout history.
An airport spokesman said: “The project's theme is Godzilla will welcome all visitors to Japan and see them off as they depart.
“It will use the global icon of Japanese origins, Godzilla, to create an unprecedented airport experience that connects the entrance and exit of a journey through the power of entertainment.
“The stage for this new challenge is Haneda Airport because it is Japan's gateway to the skies, a popular destination for people from both within Japan and overseas, and a hub for Japanese culture and tradition.
“This Godzilla of an astounding scale.”
The monster model will be kept in place for a year.
